TWOTONS construction Co.
The First Steel Barrel Warehouse
Process Of Delivery
Sam Toutounchian, set out on the perennial journey of corporate stewardship early in his professional career. After earning his BS in Engineering from UC Berkeley, he worked with elite teams at multiple Fortune 500 companies and obtained his Professional License to practice Civil Engineering from the State of California. It was in an early position at AECOM that Sam earned the nickname “TwoTons” by an asphalt paving foreman who ultimately provided a crash course in management of field mathematics:
Every Cubic Yard of Pavement weighs approximately 2 Tons
If the foreman makes a mistake in this calculation, the plant may batch too much material for the day’s shift; resulting in loss of up to 20% of the days margin. It is indicitative of the construction industry that such simple, yet esoteric, knowledge could make the difference between success and failure of a construction project. No matter how carefully planned by the Design office, nor discipline
Sam started 2Ton’s to help catalyze entrepreneurship in the Construction Industry. The key observation from his early career is that the process of delivering any project involves several key factors: Trust, Integrity, and the Persistence to maintain both of the aforementioned while still making forward Progress. He strives to improve the industry’s customer’s experience in these areas by integrating cutting edge products into the company’s standards of practice.
Sam’s tenure at AECOM can be highlighted by multiple successful pursuits with a broad range of clients. For example, he worked alongside Caltrans personnel on over $500 million worth of highway construction projects. Also, Sam was Construction Manager through Pre-Construction on SpaceX’s Hyperloop test track. Before construction began in Hawthorne, he had the opportunity to join the Google Fiber team in San Antonio as the OSP Construction Manager.
While delivering successfully delivering an OSP plant capable of servicing hundreds of thousands of homes, Sam was integral to an effort to develop internal IoT tools capable of streamlining deployments of telecommunications networks. The inspiration for TwoTon’s Construction comes from the desire to provide a broad array of customers deliver challenging projects, and hopefully contribute to the communities in which we work along the way.
The primary contributors to the success of any effort in the Construction Industry are always, quite simply, the people involved. Each stakeholder, whether the Owner, Designer, Public Agency, or Builder, absolutely must be mutually satisfied with each other’s investment in:
At TwoTon’s, we ensure a productive client experience by anticipating needs and preparing for them ahead of time. The key to our success is rooted in our personnel structure, which is supported by back-office personnel. We maintain a deep bench of Engineers, Estimators, and Project Administrators so our Project Site Staff can be effective in their efforts in the field. The result is a more direct relationship between the stakeholders and the project.
TwoTon’s Is Revolutionizing How the Industry Builds
Typical construction projects employ a Project Manager, Assistant PM, Superintendent, etc. Instead, TwoTon’s empowers a Senior Superintendent with both a team of in-house foreman and technologies that allow for superior management and communication with all stakeholders. This allows a more efficient pool of resources supporting the client-facing Superintendent.
Gone are the days of weekly meetings that end with a Project Manager looking for answers in antiquated processes and stale Vendor relationships. Cutting edge products help connect stakeholders along intentional paths of communication, streamlining scheduling and budgeting efforts. Also, TwoTon’s Construction provides the conduit through which stakeholders can achieve Trust, Progress, and Persistence to maintain the highest level of Integrity.
Underutilized Business Mentorship Program
Starting in January 2020, we are committed to incorporate at least one minority or otherwise demographically underrepresented contract per project. Our program establishes construction back-office standards of practice that help small businesses grow. We help companies such as MPG Construction (minority and women owned business enterprise certification pending) connect to both large scale bonding to bid and back-office personnel / tools / processes to complete the project.
If you have more than 51% ownership in an AEC (Architecture / Engineering / Construction) company, and are of an underrepresented or otherwise disadvantaged demographic, please consider the benefits of partnering with a company like TwoTon’s Construction. We would be equally happy to help you get certified and send you on your way. The goal here is to help diversify the Construction Industry and provide new avenues for small businesses to fill gaps in our economy.
